Page 1 of 4 KAWAYANAN FESTIVAL Historical Background
The Municipality of Gloria, through the initiative of the Municipal Tourism Council, has come up with one big festival that is distinctive among others – the KAWAYANAN FESTIVAL. Bamboo or kawayan is one of nature’s most essential and living elements. It is one of the most frequently used housing materials in the rural areas based on its characteristics and quality. Equipped with high hope and enthusiasm, the Gloriano's finally recognized bamboo’s peculiarity and importance. From banana cue sticks to home decors, furniture and houses, bamboo has been profitable in so many ways. Likewise, a variety of commercial, industrial and livelihood uses have been very significant.
The existence of the lone provincial Bambusetum in the municipality was instrumental in the conceptualization and development of the KAWAYANAN FESTIVAL through the first-organized Municipal Tourism Council led by Robert Villavicencio and the technical consultant in the person of Jose Victor Pascua.
On its first venture, Kawayanan Festival was perceived to be a glorious and momentous affair. Bamboo was showcased as a symbolic representation of flexibility, industry and hardwork, traits that are inherent among the Filipino people. This enterprising activity opened doors for growth and advancement of tourism in every barangay of the municipality and will hopefully become part of the rich cultural heritage of the people. Accordingly, the Sangguniang Bayan passed Resolution No. 553, series of 2002 dated June 28, 2002 declaring and adopting the Kawayanan Festival as the official festival of the municipality.
